چکیده

This paper presents a new, simple and practical algorithm to avoid artifacts when switching between discrete levels of detail (LOD) by smoothly blending LOD representations in image space. We analyze the alternatives of conventional alpha-blending and so-called late-switching (the switching of LODs “far enough” from the eyepoint), widely thought to solve the LOD switching discontinuity problem, and conclude that they either do not work in practice, or defeat the concept of LODs. In contrast we show that our algorithm produces visually pleasing blends for static and animated discrete LODs, for discrete LODs with different types of LOD representations (e.g. billboards and meshes) and even to some extent totally different objects with similar spatial extent, with a very small runtime overhead.

Unpopping: Solving the Image-Space Blend Problem

This paper presents a new method for smoothly blending levels of detail or other objects in image space, thereby avoiding annoying popping artifacts typically found when doing hard switching. The technique is based on a new interpretation of blending which always causes one of the two objects to be rendered opaquely, thus guaranteeing a valid z-buffer. We demonstrate visually pleasing blends be...

Frame Sequential Interpolation for Discrete Level-of-Detail Rendering

In this paper we present a method for automatic interpolation between adjacent discrete levels of detail to achieve smooth LOD changes in image space. We achieve this by breaking the problem into two passes: We render the two LOD levels individually and combine them in a separate pass afterwards. The interpolation is formulated in a way that only one level has to be updated per frame and the ot...

A regularization method for solving a nonlinear backward inverse heat conduction problem using discrete mollification method

The present essay scrutinizes the application of discrete mollification as a filtering procedure to solve a nonlinear backward inverse heat conduction problem in one dimensional space. These problems are seriously ill-posed. So, we combine discrete mollification and space marching method to address the ill-posedness of the proposed problem. Moreover, a proof of stability and<b...

Smooth Transitions for Mobile Imagery Browsing

Due to limitations of mobile environments, the handling of imagery is still problematic. This becomes especially apparent if two images are to be blended in order to create a smooth transition. As existing techniques fail to adapt to the restrictions of mobile environments, new ideas for the appropriate implementation of the blending are required. This publication proposes a new approach for th...

Ternary blending operations

We discuss new analytical formulations for localized and controllable blending operations in the functionbased solid modeling. The blending set operations are defined using R-functions and displacement functions with the localized area of influence. The shape and location of the blend are controlled by an additional bounding solid thus turning the operation into a ternary one. We also describe ...
